Ghaziabad SSP Amit Pathak said the raid was carried out by a cyber cell team. Those arrested are Ashish Suri and Vikram Chand, residents of Delhi, Avnish Gupta, who is from Meerut, Edwin George, a resident of Noida, Umesh Negi, who is from Ghaziabad, and Adarsh, originally from Bihar.
Abhay Kumar Mishra, in-charge of the cyber cell, said the gang had taken the office space in Indirapuram 18 months ago on rent and started the call centre. “Gaurav Kumar and Ram Kumar, the masterminds, used to gather data of Japanese nationals from some sources and give the same to the tele-callers. Ashish, Avnish, Umesh and Adarsh would call the potential targets.”
Mishra said Gaurav and Ram used to hire youths having a command over the Japanese language. “The accused would call the victims on Skype and X-Lite. By speaking in Japanese, the accused gained the trust of their victims. They would then gain access to their computers with the help of some software,” he said. The accused would ask their targets to pay by Google gift vouchers for software update. Gaurav and Ram used to get them encashed.
The accused have been booked under IPC Section 420 (cheating) and under relevant sections of the IT Act.
