Hindustani music is based on raagas, which are classified into ten thaats. Each maestro on the show explores one thaat through their favourite raaga. Shrabani Dasgupta, producer of the show, and Karam Waris, co-producer, say, “The idea behind the show was to create something that is enjoyable for both seasoned listeners as well as those who are listening to classical music for the first time.”
Shinjini Kulkarni, Kathak exponent, granddaughter of Pt Birju Maharaj and Ehsaas woman from Noida, hosts the show with an aim to connect with the youth. Ehsaas is a women empowerment initiative of Prabha Khaitan Foundation. Shinjini says, “The show presents classical music in an easy to understand format. I especially loved interacting with the maestros and bringing on camera the lighter side of their personalities, which will hopefully appeal to the new generation.”
Renowned artistes featured on the show, like Pt Rajan Mishra, Pt Debu Chaudhuri and Pratik Chaudhry, who passed away during the second wave of COVID-19, have made the series a treasure trove for music lovers.
The show is being telecast on DD Bharati, and will soon be available on Doordarshan’s official YouTube channel for the global audience.
