NOIDA: Alpha, Beta, Delta and Omicron’s lives as addresses in Greater Noida could end soon, with GNIDA prefering a digit-based nomenclature for its sectors.
The reason: confusion in writing, explaining and understanding the names, officials said. “A final decision will be taken by the committee,” said GNIDA CEO Narendra Bhooshan, who presented the proposal on Thursday.
GNIDA’s first chairman, Yogendra Narain, proposed the use of Greek alphabets in 1991, sources said. The sectors were named Alpha, Beta, Gamma, Delta, Omicron, Mu and so on. Numbers were suffixed to these to divide them. As the city evolved, newer sectors were assigned numbers, but their locations were not necessarily in that order.
According to the proposal, the residential sectors will become numerals, like in Noida.
Industrial sectors, too, will have uniformity in nomenclature. “The names of the institutional and IT sectors will remain the same, such as Knowledge Park 1, 2, 3, 4,” said Bhooshan.
GNIDA’s additional CEO Deep Chandra, who is heading the renaming committee, told TOI on Friday, “The (current) nomenclature is haphazard. For example, Sector 27 is a residential sector and also an industrial sector. ” The first meeting of the committee is scheduled on April 6.
Residents don’t necessarily agree that the sector names are con fusing. In fact, some said they would oppose the renaming because the sector names are so integral to Greater Noida. “There is no logic or purpose in going ahead with this proposal. We will w rite a letter to the state government as well as the authority not to go ahead with this proposal,” said Alok Singh, founder of Greater Noida-based Active Citizens Team.
